Selling Digital Products
by Mark Austin on February 18, 2010
Type: Tutorial

Basically when you resell digital products you will first need to register a domain name  (www.godaddy.com/ or www.namecheap.com/) and you will need a webhost to "host" your domain & "store" your sites & products on (such as http://www.hostgator.com/).  Quick plug --> all RRW Gold Members get free pro hosting.  :-)

You'll need to upload the product's reseller website to your host using your ftp utility (like FileZilla (http://filezilla-project.org/). Next, you will need to add your product to a folder & name the folder something odd so that it's hard to guess ... like "ProductName_X3QjUs", or whatever. You do this so that free loaders can't download your product just by guessing the download address. You would be surprised how many people overlook this step, and as a result they get taken advantage of.

Next, you will need to zip (compress) that download folder & upload it to your host. Two of the leading zip programs are 7-Zip (www.7-zip.org/) and WinZip (www.winzip.com/). Be sure to note the location where you upload it to.

There are several ways that you can edit the salepage. If you have a basic knowledge of HTML, just open it up with Notepad, Notepad++ (www.notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm),  or TextPad (www.textpad.com/).  Or if you prefer, you can just use one of the HTML editors such as:

CoffeeCup (www.coffeecup.com/)
Kompozer (www.kompozer.net/)
Dreamweaver (www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/)
Expression Web (www.microsoft.com/expression/)

And, or course, be sure to save your changes before you upload the edited salespage. Speaking of the salespage, I think it's always a good idea to add your name, a guarantee, and possibly a bonus to the existing salespage. Don't forget to add a 'Privacy Policy', 'Terms Of Use', & 'Contact Us' page to your site as well.

You will need a Paypal account to take payment (see http://www.paypal.com/). To setup the payment button & download delivery, just log into your Paypal account. Click on "Merchant Services" and then click on "Buy Now" (under "Create Buttons").  Fill in the necessary information on that page. At the bottom of the page under "Step 3: Customize advanced features" you will notice where it says "Take customer to a specific page (URL) after successful checkout:". This is where you enter the url to your download page. After you fill in all the information, Paypal will give you the necessary HTML code that you will need to paste into your salesletter for the "Buy It Now" button.

Using Paypal to deliver your product works just fine ... but I personally prefer using a product delivery script such as DLGuard (www.dlguard.com/dlginfo/index.php). DLGuard will automatically delivery the product after a customer makes a purchase using a unique download link. This benefits you because you don't have to worry about people stealing your product. Nor do you have to worry about someone posting your download link on some public forum somewhere. (believe me, it happens!)  Also, some people also use services such as eJunkie to take care of this.  (see www.e-junkie.com/)

After you get all that done you may want to have a friend make a test purchase to make sure everything is working properly. Then, of course, you could just refund the purchase .... that is unless your friend owes you money!

Thanks,
Mark
